Driver Authority (Bus) Courses

In New South Wales, if you intend to drive a public passenger vehicle, legislation also requires you to have a NSW "Driver Authority for drivrs of public passenger vehicles".

The NSW Driver Authority also covers those drivers, with a car licence only, who operate mini-buses to transport passengers.

A Driver Authority is valid for a period of three years.

Steps in Obtaining a Driver Authority

STEP ONE To obtain an Authority to drive buses, an applicant must first establish that they meet the required criteria as set out in the revised Passenger Transport Regulation 2007.

This criterion requires an applicant to:

  • be at least twenty (20) years of age; and
  • hold an unrestricted/unconditional driver licence issued in NSW; and
  • have held an unrestricted Australian driver licence for a total of at least twelve (12) months in the two (2) years immediately preceding the date of the application; and
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or hold a visa allowing the person to work in Australia; and
  • have passed an examination or assessment, at a level determined by the Director-General, in medical fitness; and

Satisfy that he or she:

  • may lawfully work in Australia; and
  • have knowledge of the Act and Regulations relating to the operation of a bus; and
  • is of good repute and in all other respects a fit and proper person to be the driver of the vehicle concerned; and
  • has sufficient responsibility to drive the vehicle concerned in accordance with law and custom.

STEP TWO Applicant undertakes training and if successful, qualifies for a "Completion of Training" certificate.

STEP THREE Applicant undertakes a medical and lodges a completed Driver Authority Application Form, along with the medical report, photographs and payment.

STEP FOUR Ministry of Transport processes the application and either:

a. Forwards the appropriate Driver Authority to the applicant; or

b. Advises the applicant that their application was unsuccessful.
