What is the Graduated Licence Scheme (GLS)?

Changes to the Graduated Licensing Scheme for learner drivers

The Graduated Licensing Scheme for learner drivers has changed.

From 19 December 2009, learner drivers who complete a one hour structured driving lesson with a fully licensed driving instructor can record three hours driving experience in their Learner driver log book.

A maximum of 10 hours of lessons will be accepted and recorded as 30 hours in the Learner driver log book.

In addition, learner drivers who are aged 25 and over will no longer be required to present a Learner driver log book prior to attempting the driving test.

The Graduated Licence Scheme was introduced in New South Wales in 2000. The GLS requires Learners to combine training, education and practical experience in accordance with the requirements of the Learner Log book.

The Log book provides for compulsory driving experience in a variety of conditions under controlled conditions. The Log book must be signed off by the driving instructor or supervisor.

New drivers must pass through three stages before obtaining an unrestricted licence:

  • Learners Licence
  • Provisional P1 Licence
  • Provisional P2 Licence

Why professional lessons?

Driving instructors are specially trained professionals with cars specially equipped for the teaching process. They can take the hassle out of the teaching process that many parents feel when it comes to a first time learner driver.

ABC encourages a partnership between the driving instructor, parent or supervising driver and the learner to gain experience and the skills to be a safe and competent driver.
